"Al Kadar Bird and Parrot Sanctuary”

This sanctuary began with my own two birds, a green winged macaw and a blue fronted Amazon parrot which have been my companions for many years.

Soon more birds began to arrive looking for homes or in one sad case abandoned in a tiny cage in a garage when his owners had sold their home, it was nearly a cruel end to a beautiful blue fronted Amazon. He is now happily installed with his new mate in a cage where the birds are able to fly.

When the sanctuary began to grow with more birds arriving, I decided to try and pair the birds and provide nesting boxes for them. As it is very difficult to distinguish between the sexes in some species, two feathers are plucked from each bird and sent to a laboratory in Barcelona where the sex of the bird is determined through its DNA.

1 on the 3 chicks born in Alkadar

In the summer of 2006 three orange winged Amazon chicks were hatched, one was left in the nest with its parents to raise and two were taken to be hand raised so they may become used to humans and enjoy being handled.

Other species successfully breeding at Al Kadar are love birds, cockatiels, and finches. This summer 2007 blue fronted Amazon chicks hatched.

Every Summer / Autumn homebred and raised young birds are available for sale. All parrots are sold ringed and with CITES papers.
